University of Lausanne - UNIL

Responding to contemporary challenges

The UNIL was born in 1537. It was then intended for the training of pastors. Over the centuries, the number of professorships increases, the teaching diversifies. In 1890, the Academy received the name and status of university. In 1970, it gradually moved from the center of Lausanne to Dorigny.

The end of the 20th century witnessed an important cooperation and development project between the universities of Lausanne, Geneva, Neuchâtel and the EPFL. In 2003, two new Faculties are born from a desire to focus on humans and living beings: the Faculty of Biology and Medicine and the Faculty of Environmental Geosciences.

In 2020, UNIL crosses the milestone of 16,000 students, welcoming no less than 3,000 newcomers at the start of the September term. Interdisciplinarity allows UNIL to foster interactions with its environment and with other scientific institutions, to make its research more visible to the public and to respond to the challenges of the times.

The FORCAD School of French as a Foreign Language at UNIL continues to offer distance learning courses.
