Kabuki: the dramatic art of the people

A look back at this popular artistic practice.

Kabuki, an art form halfway between dance and theater, derived from the word kabuku, meaning "out of the ordinary", can be traced back to the streets of Kyoto in the 17th century.

Kabuki became a popular dramatic art form, with its use of make-up and facial expressions rather than masks, as well as its use of everyday events. Amanda Mattes traces the evolution of Kabuki and its place in Japan's rich cultural heritage.
