Enabling a discussion
about world knowledge
Hypothes.is is an original initiative with great potential in education. Its goal is to improve the quality of information in the Internet and in general. The ambition is to add a new layer to the Internet: the discussion layer.
To achieve this, hypothes.is proposes an open, free, non-profit, and neutral platform to facilitate critical annotation associated with news, blogs, scientific articles, books, laws, and other documents circulating on the Internet in a transparent and community-based manner. No one owns the system, it is collective and the standard used is open.
In collective practice
You will notice in the upper right corner of this article three or four rather discreet buttons. These are the annotation tools added à this article only. But we could have added them to the whole site without any further effort. Which we will do eventually.
These buttons allow you to annotate this page publicly, on a group or class level, or privately. But you can also annotate a video, a table, or any document posted on the Internet.
The process is very simple: you select a part of the text or what is posted, (go ahead and try it), then click on the bottom button and annotate as you wish. (À your first try you will need to register with Hypothes.is).
If you click on a highlighted area, you will see the comments appear. We can even add images and videos
The top button is used to make the highlighted items disappear if they disrupt your reading.
If you add a tag (a keyword) to an annotation, then you will have access on Hypothes.is to everything that has been indexed with that word. If the tag is popular and public, it can border quite quickly but also allow for disclosures. If you keep it private, then one limits its use to only people in their group or self only.
It is also possible to share comments on networks or by email, to re-post comments, to re-tweet them and also to re-release or delete anything you have written.
In individual practice
For more traditional use, you can also install a button in your browser bar or go directly to the Hypothes.is to add bookmarks and comments to the documents you post.
Open Discussion
It is easy to see how powerful this tool can be for a group of students, for teaching or for editors. One can enrich an article, initiate discussions, and make one's case through references.
In terms of critical thinking education, this tool allows everyone to test the value of their thinking and to confront it with others. Any academic resource can be enriched by the contributions of those who use it, individually or collectively.
The potential is immense.
