Flexibility, customization, communication, collaboration...

Flexibility

Assessment is based on criteria, standards and practices that are continually evolving, so flexibility is an essential criterion expected of an assessment system.

Customization

Applying the same criteria in the same way to all people and in all contexts may be interesting at the level of selection and discrimination, but it is particularly ineffective at the pedagogical level.

In education, it is preferable to be able to adapt evaluation criteria to people and contexts. To be able to say "Here's what's expected of you" and make it seem attainable, so that people can invest themselves in achieving it.

An assessment system is expected to allow for personalization.

Communication

Expectations of education are manifold and the criteria numerous, often cross-cutting (applying to several fields). Many people are involved; first and foremost, teachers and administrators need to monitor students' progress in various disciplines (French, maths, etc.), students need to know exactly where they stand, and parents may also be interested.

Assessment systems are required to enable communication between all stakeholders.

Collaboration

In view of the assessment load and complexity, it's in teachers' interest to exchange questions and give each other mutual support, an essential quality of an assessment tool that will be adopted by a community.

Students can collaborate with each other, and even call on outside help if necessary. Although collaboration may seem strange when considering assessment, it remains a quality in demand and is becoming increasingly important. It contributes to success. An assessment tool that enables collaboration gains in popularity and effectiveness.

Here is a list of current assessment tools that meet several of these criteria. Assessment evolves...
