University: transition ecosystem?

Teaching and research at the heart of the new world equation

A history including roots and wings

The Institut Catholique de Lille was created in 1875 with the ambition to help everyone grow in humanity. Today, the international university proposes itself as a city of reconstruction for the world to come, an innovative ecosystem integrated into the city. It is a multidisciplinary institution open to business and focused on innovation for society. A place of "student agility".

The "learning city" is a place where researchers, students, companies, associations co-construct, cohabit, cooperate with nature. The institute responds to the need to invent modes on the social and technical level to create a new world more in tune with nature. The institute is confessional but not confessing, that is to say that it refers to Christian anthropology, but does not oblige its students to go to mass. The institute is of secular values within a Christian anthropology. While the rector president is appointed by Rome and takes the title of "magnificent," he is also validated by the school's administration.

The institute includes several faculties, for example, a medical school and training of doctors with 1,000 hospital beds, but also a school of engineering, a school of design and a laboratory of ethics with more than 30 researchers. Today, 12,000 students attend the institute. Each investment in land by the institute is an opportunity for real projects in the city. The establishment in a place and the reflection that accompanies it even becomes a project.

Neighborhood Humanicité laboratory for better living together

Jeremy Rifkin's visit to the North of France and his questions about the reindustrialization of a territory were powerful stimuli for the Humanicité project. In the early 2000s, the Catholic Institute of Lille launched the "Humanicité" project a form of "demonstrator" and full-scale tester of new forms of living together, capable of accommodating fragile people, promoting mixed habitats, relying on a participatory method and capable of being part of a sustainable development aim.

To do this, the institute became an "urban developer" acquired land and built an entire neighborhood and its instances of co-development of living together. In a phase 1, it was necessary to think about and accompany the construction of the buildings; in a phase 2 it was a matter of immersing itself in the neighborhood to build living together (Assembly of inhabitants, local radio broadcast, development of shared garden plots, etc.) Training, research and service to society are combined.

Humanicité presents itself as an "ecosystem of societal innovation" to create inclusive communities in an old neighborhood of Lille. It is a model for the development of the city, a laboratory for educational approaches and a creator of new social added value. It is a logic of living lab on the scale of an educational institution that is being implemented.

For example, the associated EPHAD (medicalized retirement home) Saint Antoine de Padou includes 800 beds, 22,000 m2 of space. It is associated with the project to cope with an aging population. It participates in research on living together at all ages of life. The Ephad is open to the neighborhood. It aims to help future generations assume their own aging.

Based on this know-how, living lab development trainings are developed and many universities and actors visit the discoveries made.

The ADICODE and Adimaker

Adicode and Adimaker programs are part of the institute's engineering school, whose objectives are to feed the planet, accelerate the energy and urban transition, and develop the digital and industrial transition. They are aimed at 5000 students. The principles are those of innovation in the service of renewal via new technologies and Collective Intelligence.

Adicode

Adicode are innovation and codesign workshops for services and products. They promote a disciplinary crossover. They promote a posture of experimentation of the design from project on real subjects of innovation entrusted by companies. It is the ancestor of the "collaborative design" .

As an experiential learning, Adicode allows people to think about innovation from a technological knowledge and in the context of creativity workshops on user-centered approaches. The use-based approach confronts the values, habits and beliefs of co-designers in the very act of design. This acts on the ethics of design.

Co-design also makes it possible to enter into a logic of rapid prototyping. In this process, the visions of the participants come together during the process. The Adicodes feed the institute's codeign rooms with new approaches such as the creation of personas and business models (Canvas). They play the role of strange attractor and accompaniment to the transformation, and capture the energy of researchers. 40 professors are now able to lead this type of workshop.

Adimaker

Adimaker is a preparatory course for engineering schools. The pedagogy is experiential in contrast to the preparatory classes math sup and math speciale very versed in theory. It is a program based on peer-to-peer work, with many co-developed projects. It is a learning by doing in Fab-lab type environments or directly in the city.

This work is done in real life on the basis of real projects from which theoretical knowledge is deduced. For example, calculating the trigonometric angle of a robotic arm to put sugar in a coffee. As for "humanicity", the "demonstrator is at scale 1", it is less a model than an intervention on the real. In this way, the lived co-elaboration is a democratic alternative. Co-elaborative management could succeed participatory management.

Adicode and Adimaker are supported by a technology store ("techshop"), a real space for creators of objects of 2900 m2 equipped to intervene on a variety of materials with 150 machines for sewing, reprography, woodworking, metalworking. 10 coaches animate a community of members, project holders

Live Tree Program

Always in the idea of "demonstrator", the "Live Tree" program to promote the idea of energy renovation, production of renewable energy and the issue of autonomy of the city. The ambition is to become a 0-carbon university. For this, the campus produces energy and distributes it to the different sites. At the same time as concrete achievements are developed, a "transition explorer" chair is designed to accompany and study the effects of the transition.

To help users, workshops, exchanges, and conferences are led to appropriate new uses. The "rizzome building" is imagined as a means to transform energy practices. Eventually, the ambition is to become a smart grid (smart grid) with fully offset carbon by 2022.

Urban farming (Urban farming )

The Palais Rameau is a historic monument in Lille at the heart of an estate that includes a landscaped park and a janitor's house. Its rehabilitation is at the heart of an urban farm project . It is a demonstrator of another way of feeding the world. It is intended to be open to the neighborhood, it mixes digital and biological to cross ecological transition and urban issues.

The project is a multi-site demonstrator comprising 5000 m2 of urban agriculture including greenhouses and roof gardens, green roofs and vines, composters, aquaponics, an agri-food hall. It models ways of greening the city. Geographically, the project extends to the outskirts of the urban territory, exploring biocontrol, agroforestry, soil remediation, an urban farm, and the issue of animal welfare. Partner farms are associated with the project to conduct research-actions in agro-ecological innovation. This demonstrator with more than 5000 trees [1] participates in making the Catholic University of Lille 0-carbon.

This project is in a way the learning ground at scale 1 of the engineering and agriculture school. It participates in bringing agriculture to the city. But the project is also open to the city with the desire to be, community of sharing within land in rehabilitation of land without activities, development of technical and agronomic know-how in the city

Design School Innovation and entrepreneurship/intrapreneurship

The Design School aims to promote pedagogical innovation, but also to carry out foresight at the regional level. The Hémisf4ire project aims to spark innovation throughout the institute. It is equipped with a television studio to produce broadcasts or the capsules used in flipped courses (60% of courses). The challenge is for students to produce the courses themselves. It is up to them to construct knowledge, but the definition of the source is crucial. Otherwise the truth is only verisimilitude. Access to knowledge is fundamental.

In flipped pedagogy, the teacher accompanies towards the truth. These reversed courses are still based on an experimental room that includes 32 projection surfaces. A professional radio studio is made available to again produce resources. Flipped classroom, radio, web radio, design, art contribution, serious game are at the heart of a creative renewal. The HangArt is a creative space coupled with the Design School. It fits with the takeover of a design school and includes a mini stage, artistic residencies. As in the "Humanicité" project it aims to create a city district based on the idea of craft 4.0.

The Ecoposs biennial "dare to praise the future"

Innovation relies on event rituals that serve as an attractor upstream for the preparation and downstream of the event, it is less a show than a networking of actors who come to learn from the third place and to the third place. The "Ecoposs" event is an event demonstrator with the aim of "daring to praise the future" with an ambition of a sustainable ethical future.

Such an event is designed to highlight the 250 identified themes with many offers of conferences, workshops, screenings and master classes. A semantic engine will help visitors to make their visit basket and regulate the flows. In addition many events are present in the event, accessible by wandering such as Wild Earth exhibition, artistic creativity on campus, book fair, film festival, social weeks of France, international meetings of foresight, scientific congress ethics and data, audiovisual and literary creation competitions to imagine news of the future, villages and thematic pavilions, seminars of think-tank on the occasion of the event, village of humanist entrepreneurs.

An experimentation of local currency is also proposed on the occasion of this event.

A living environment

This university transition is based on a way of rethinking links and places in the service of a sustainable transition. Creative and relational intensity is at the heart of the innovation ecosystem project even before technological investment.

The emerging paradigm is that of an endo-contributive economy (what comes from within) rather than an exo-contributive one (what comes from without). In the old model, the status of the place takes precedence over the link, in a new world the density of links creates the place and the economic wealth. The core engine is co-creation and open experimentation.
