It surely hasn't escaped your notice, but the future of humanity seems uncertain. Let's rule out potential conflicts and the effects of climate change right off the bat and focus on the evolution of technology. Thirty years ago, the idea of virtual reality was confined to laboratory experiments and conversational robots were science fiction. Yet ChatGPT and Bard will soon be used by anyone who wants to and virtual reality headsets are becoming more and more accessible to the average person.
In fact, this virtual universe is almost seen as a continent to conquer. Facebook has even become Meta to both remake its image and also to bring this idea of a digital environment that carries. The concept of metavers is gradually gaining interest, although some people remain wary of this technology. While many say it's impossible to know what jobs will be in demand in the coming decades, some have already put their money on the metaverse.
It might sound far-fetched, but the demand for metaverse jobs is appreciable. The metaverse is an environment that offers both a virtual universe and also mechanics that are similar to video games. Consequently, for observers of this technology, an incubator of jobs is opening up for young and old alike. Some estimate more than 10,000 jobs in Europe alone.
What do we mean by metaverse profession? It means everything and nothing. Are we talking about programmers? Of cybersecurity specialists? Among others. In fact, as this article from "Les Echos" explains well, the possible jobs would fall under four types:
This is all something to smile about. Virtual real estate agents? Yet there is already a first agency of its kind that sells land in various metavers. Right now, demand is high for designers but very soon, other sectors will need workers.
Some will require virtually no prior knowledge, such as narrative or content creation. Some careers will also be able to continue into the metaverse. So, yes, teachers will be in demand as this universe is built.
With job opportunities also come specialized studies. Indeed, these future professionals of this virtual universe will need to be trained. Generalist MOOCs already exist to train on the fundamentals of this metaverse, including blockchain and virtual reality interfaces, among others. Longer courses are emerging in various European universities. The WU Executive Academy in Vienna, EMST Berlin and the metaverse College in Paris offer courses that will cover even more of the elements of this 3.0 universe such as massive data, artificial intelligence and even the sustainable development of such technology.
The Meta company itself has invested in educational institutions. It has collaborated in the creation of at least two academies, the ParisCode program and a free training course that takes place in several French cities. The idea being that anyone can get started, including seniors.
The demands, according to company officials, are only growing and it seems more important than ever to offer citizens knowledge in order to, possibly, take a turn for the metaverse. Of course, all these initiatives are not done simply out of great generosity. The future of Meta lies in the growing adoption of metavers by businesses, schools and individuals in general. These professions are therefore indeed those of a potential future... provided that metavers become perennial. Which, at the moment, is not guaranteed.
