Free access to scientific research and knowledge

Free access to millions of scientific documents. Share yours

Researcher writing his results

Accessing scientific knowledge has two components:

  • the first is being published and
  • the second is finding what has been published.

The publication effort has costs, which are generally offset at the time of dissemination, by those who purchase the papers or subscriptions. Since most scientific research is publicly funded, it makes sense that it should be available to all citizens.

With the Internet, the cost of dissemination has become marginal and it is much cheaper to fund this dissemination directly rather than paying for each work. The Open Access - Accès libre movement has taken hold with the advent of the Internet. Large, wealthy scientific publishers are now focusing on value-added services.

Here are about 20 global scientific knowledge access services.
