A large part of France is covered by forest: 25.3 million hectares, including 8.2 in the French overseas departments. This brings incredible diversity, with temperate, mountain, Mediterranean and even tropical woods in the West Indies, South America and the islands of the Indian Ocean. As a result, it is a highly interesting object of analysis for biologists, among others.
The Observatoire des Forêts Françaises aims to be a reference site that can be used by the general public and schools alike. The site offers thematic dossiers to help you find out more, news to keep you up to date with the state of health of the French forest and its territories, various resources (documentation, data, thematic maps, websites and guides) and even an interactive map showing the different forest areas, including those in public ownership, those exploited by the forestry industry, and so on.
All in all, the site is a must for anyone interested in France's forests. Although not originally created for school classes, teachers of all levels could find nuggets to help them deal with subjects concerning local woodlands, their importance and so on.
