Mapping the sound environment

An Android app for noise specialists

NoiseCapture

The subject of environmental noise and pollution is increasingly present in discussions on both ecology and urban planning. However, the issue remains rather vague. It's difficult to determine objectively the level of sound, what it's made of and whether it's pleasant or not. Nevertheless, an application aimed primarily at sound specialists (although available to the general public) is available on Android devices.

Mapping the sound environment

NoiseCapture lets experienced users wander around their neighborhoods, wherever they may be in the world, and record the background sounds of different places and routes. To do this, you'll need a microphone or a calibrated mobile device, which the application can verify with a few tests. All you have to do is walk around for a while, making sure your microphone picks up the ambience. The software will then take note of the geolocation, the volume of the noise, its spectrum and so on. Then, once the end has been recorded, the user can specify the measurement conditions, the predominant sources of noise and, more subjectively, how pleasant the sound environment is.

In this way, NoiseCapture users have been able to create community maps and noise data that provide a more accurate picture of noise pollution in certain urban environments or elsewhere. These data can then be used by organizations and neighborhood groups alike to determine whether or not the environment has an acceptable level of noise, and to act accordingly.
