Mining in the name of energy transition... to be discussed

Faculty of Philosophy study examines community law

Open-pit mine

"Do communities occupying territory rich in minerals critical to the energy transition have a moral obligation to exploit them? This question lies at the heart of the research carried out by Jérôme Gosselin-Tapp, professor in the Faculty of Philosophy.
Do communities have the right to say no? "At the moment, they certainly have an obligation with regard to the transition to a green economy, but this still has enormous implications for the groups that will host the mines or industries," explains Jérôme Gosselin-Tapp. He adds that communities that oppose projects are often accused of being 'not in my backyard'."

In a context where other possibilities for decarbonizing our activities exist, governments' strategic choices are open to criticism, or at the very least subject to a precautionary principle. The burden of persuasion lies with those who propose actions as disruptive as these immense mines.
