The Florida Museum's OpenVertebrate project offers a virtual collection of 13,000 3D models of vertebrates, including mammals, reptiles, birds, fish- in fact, virtually any animal with an internal or external skeleton.
High-resolution photos and x-ray scans are then processed to bring out their most interesting features. The best part is that you can examine them from every angle, as they are 3D models.
A visit to the specimen gallery will allow you to judge the quality of this proposal. To see them in 3D, go to the Florida Museum section on SketchFab.
Accessible technology
The problem with 3D is that the files are very large and often require a special player to view them. Managing and distributing them is a further complication. It is precisely these problems that SketchFab proposes to take on. If you have 3D models, SketchFab offers to host and distribute them free of charge. If you wish to control distribution and even monetize your models, a range of subscriptions is available.
Most museums and universities have collections of artefacts whose size or value is often unknown to anyone other than the few curators who maintain them. This kind of technology makes it possible to manage and disseminate them on a scale of interest to researchers and the public alike.
