What do young leukemia patients want?
Lots of things, including of course getting better as best as possible, but when asked what they wanted in a video game after explaining the project's intent, they said they wanted drama, complex organic environments, lots of feedback and clear, achievable goals.
They also wanted a sense of accomplishment and the feeling that it was possible to win.
After five years of prototyping and gameplay refinement, the final iteration of Re-Mission is a third-person shooter with the look and feel of some popular video games.
The player controls a nanobot that moves through a patient's body, annihilating cancer cells and other infections in various ways, while reporting symptoms to an in-game "Dr. West".
During the course of the games - of which there are 6 - the player is exposed to information on cancer treatments, including how the various interventions complement and interact with each other, on chemotherapy and on the imperative need to adhere to these treatments.
Over 100,000 young cancer patients have enjoyed the game... and so have many others.
The game is played on iPhone and iPad. - Re-Mission - 2 Nanobot's Revenge - Free
