Regularity and creativity: two incompatible concepts?

The need for solid foundations

Creativity belongs to those who know how to get out of their comfort zone and whose aim is to innovate again and again. Regularity is often associated with conformism and routine constancy. Are the two concepts incompatible?

Consistency: maintaining productivity

Regularity is a notorious strength for those who want to be consistent in their productivity. In fact, it's a guarantee of success in both business and personal projects. In fact, a person who is consistent in his or her professional performance will always be admired by his or her employer. It's also an important indicator for assessing performance in many fields, such as sport, culture and education, to name but a few.

In the field of sport, and soccer in particular, what prompts a coach to continue to place his trust in a player is his consistency in past performances. César Azpilicueta is one of the most consistent players the world of soccer has ever known. He regularly put in good performances, whether at Marseille in France or later at Chelsea in England.

It takes a little more to be creative?

To ride the wave of creativity, other factors come into play. In reality, regularity makes you predictable, because it's as if you're in a dynamic that doesn't change, and you're content with that. We deliver the same services every day in the areas we are called upon to serve. Creativity, on the other hand, means taking risks; you have to step out of your comfort zone, take unusual paths and achieve impressive results.

In the school context, learners are asked to reproduce the answers expected by their teachers, especially at lower levels. When you get to a higher level, you expect a bit more from these learners, more so for subjects like philosophy and literature, they have to set their own reasoning in motion. Of course, the strategy for solving the problem will differ from one student to the next, but this is a moment of creativity - divergent thinking.

Jeff Bezos is an American billionaire who didn't want to stop at Amazon as a simple digital bookstore. The platform has evolved by diversifying its offerings; this genius was quick to understand the potential of the internet and so moved to an online sales site tout court, backed by increasingly sophisticated IT services. In addition to books, other accessories can now also be sold. Speaking of Bézos, it says: "Like all great brains, he needs to move, to be stimulated by any desire to move forward, and, above all, toinnovate by going even further."

Regularity: the key to creativity?

While it's true that regularity and creativity don't necessarily go hand in hand, isn't it possible to consider one as a hinge stage to the other? In other words, before migrating to new horizons on the creative spectrum, we need to maintain a certain regularity in what is already a given. Before becoming a general e-commerce platform, Amazon was for a long time a digital bookstore. This means that the first offering had to be consistent.

This is all the more feasible given that consistency lays a solid foundation on which to build the next big thing without fear. A famous statement by Thomas Edison states that, "Genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration." We can well understand this, because to create the light bulb, he had to make over 1000 attempts, which he considers 1000 consecutive steps before succeeding. In other words, there's nothing wrong with consistency when it comes to progressive innovation.
