In many parts of the world, drinking water is in short supply. With this in mind, Mel Science has developed a kit that makes it possible to obtain pure water using simple scientific processes that can be applied at home with children. More precisely, it involves assembling two types of filter to clean samples of organic contaminants and heavy metals.
What's involved?
To make this experiment possible, you need to:
- Purify water with a DIY filter (this is a filter you make from available materials, without having to buy a commercial filter).
- Create a filter that removes heavy metals such as lead, mercury and arsenic.
- Learn how to obtain an oxy-hydrogen mixture through water electrolysis (a chemical process that breaks down water into its elementary components: oxygen (O2) and hydrogen (H2)).
New findings
During this fun and educational science experiment, you'll acquire a certain amount of theoretical and practical knowledge. In fact, you'll learn about :
- How activated carbon water filters work
- Ion exchange resin and how to use it in a water filter
- Electrolysis
