ECG: sound familiar?

It palpitates in different ways...

Mel science's Medical Kit series takes a closer look at an aspect that is generally only known to real doctors. This is the ECG (electrocardiogram). When a patient is hospitalized, we often see an ECG monitor showing the heart's electrical activity...

What's expected of the learner

To immerse themselves in this hands-on learning experience, learners will :

  • Take his/her own electrocardiogram with an ECG machine (medical device used to record the heart's electrical activity)

  • Identify the electrocardiogram of a person suffering a myocardial infarction (also known as a heart attack), which occurs when the blood supply to part of the heart muscle is blocked.

  • Deciphering multiple cardiograms with an ECG ruler

New insights

This other medical experience has many points of interest. In fact, the learner will come away from the experience with practical knowledge. They will now be able to :

  • correctly attach electrodes (the sensors used to detect the heart's electrical activity) ;
  • Understand what the spikes on the cardiogram are and what they mean;
  • Know how to decode an ECG.
