WikiVoyage, travel guides written by Internet users

Free licensed travel guides from the Wikimedia Foundation

Traveling always requires a bit of organization. Having some knowledge about the place you are visiting makes for a much more relaxing trip. The travel guide industry is actually making a fortune off this need for security. But wouldn't it be just as interesting - and much cheaper - to get information from other travelers or locals?

With this in mind, the Wikimedia Foundation decided to leverage its huge community of contributors to create WikiVoyage, an online travel guide with all of its content designed through crowdsourcing.

The French version has more than 8,400 entries, more than 3,200 Spanish, more than 1,000 Portuguese, and even more English that describe parks, cities, routes, territories, and countries. Each guide is subdivided into various categories. All begin with a general description of the place. Then the subdivisions can be about tourist spots, language, climate, transportation, places to eat, lodging, etc.

Of course, like many entries on Wikipedia, not all articles are of the same level. Some are very comprehensive, while others could use a little more detail and information. Moreover, each page is rated on 3 stars: 1 means it is usable, 2 stars it is a real guide and the maximum is the starred guide (3). As the site is rather recent, there are currently more drafts and usable guides than complete guides. French-speaking Internet users are therefore strongly invited to improve the texts for their region, city or country on WikiVoyage.
