Solutions to add interactivity to a course

The online offering is constantly expanding to provide dynamic training

It's hard these days to expect an audience to be picture-perfect. The rambling speeches of even impassioned professors rarely hold the attention for very long. While we might point to a technology that does, indeed, wear down attention, studies since the mid-twentieth century tend to conclude that the fully lectured is not as effective as once thought.

Many learners need to experiment, to question, to go beyond what is written in the textbook. Or, at least, to take action from time to time so they don't succumb to the songs of apps in personal devices.

Solutions that still work

Since 1997, we've been identifying, testing, and observing interactive resources that can be used equally well in an elementary school, a university auditorium, or an online conference. Our directory includes several tools that are still very relevant. Whether it's complete solutions like Wooclap or survey applications like Sli.do, these still have relevance. Even more so in the uncertain context of a pandemic that has forced institutions to adopt various solutions rather than 100% face-to-face.

Kahhot and its playful approach are a big hit with classes. Especially since it can be used on all devices and works well with live streaming. Yet, as this American article reminds us, other apps exist in the genre.

Quizlet offers teachers the ability to create virtual cheat sheets to review and apply learning through exercise. A little less recreational than Kahoot but just as interactive and useful. Math can be scary for many students who become paralyzed when faced with algebra operations. Photomath allows them to literally photograph a problem and see how to solve it step by step. Obviously, you have to make sure the app is banned during exams, but it does give those with delays or misunderstandings a better grasp of how to do it through explanations and even animations.

New tools

For math teachers, the importance of providing interactivity in exercises can be paramount. This is why there are interfaces dedicated solely to this school subject. One of the best known is Cabri, which, although paid, offers with its new version even more tools for teachers to develop geometry, algebra and other problems. It becomes rather easy to build modules without mastering computer programming.

For its part, the KidSack presents series of interactive, self-adjusting exercises that will make teachers' lives much easier. All they will have to do is choose a path, the desired exercises and share them with the students. Afterwards, the teacher only has to follow the completion of the activities, the results, etc. The software also uses Python, allowing learners to practice this computer language. It's even possible for parents to observe their child's progress.

Canopé is known for providing technology solutions for teachers. Thus, in late 2020, appeared the Quizinière, a tool that not only aims to be a luscious word game but also a complete application to create interactive exercises. The teacher simply logs in to the site and creates activities with a few clicks. The interface is easy to use. Simply drag and drop items to change the order in which they appear. Afterwards, students can access them either by entering the code directly on the site or by scanning a QR code. The teacher can then correct the whole thing provide annotations and feedback to the student. Canopé suggests as an example different types of exercises including a dictation produced by offering an audio file and leaving an answer space where learners will copy it.

Finally, AgoraQuiz leans more toward quizzes. However, the exercise is meant to be different since the students write the questions first. The teacher validates them and shares them with other members of the class. Again, this approach is fun in that the idea is to organize games in teams. They take place in four rounds of 3 multiple choice questions. The teacher can still follow each learner individually to note potential difficulties. This free tool, which does not collect the children's personal data, has a good potential to revise the knowledge acquired during the year on different themes. For now, the site is still in beta phase but all the promised features are already there.
