What an artificial intelligence understands about our world

To find out, ask him to draw it!

At the crossroads of Salvator Dali and WALL-E, the emptying robot, we find DALL-E , a graphic generator of artificial intelligence that translates your expressions and proposals into images.

Two of the designers of DALL-E, due to its success, have created Craiyon which now delivers more than 50,000 computer-generated images per day. The number of memes he has generated on the networks is properly amazing.

Inspiring and wacky

For now, he understands English, so for interesting results, you speak to him in English.

To get creative images, don't hesitate to use picture language.

By collating several million images in relation to their description, the AI generates original images.  So far, due to the limitations of its understanding of the physical relationships between elements in this version, the generated images are often bizarre, distorted faces, bumpy bodies, inconsistent landscapes, but for some ideas, the result is quite enlightening.

Prejudice or reality

I asked it to take turns illustrating a university of the rich and a university of the poor. The AI apparently did a great job of associating the meaning of "rich" and "poor" with reality.

Limiting Bias

Fairly, by relying on the human productions we digitize by the billions, the best and the worst, an AI's interpretation of our world can be directed and manipulated, as we have already seen on networks.

This can amplify our foibles on a scale never before seen; so much so that the designers of DALL-E 2 at Open AI, faced with the high quality of the images it is now capable of generating (shadows and relative sizes are taken into account), have decided to limit access to it to people who subscribe and abide by a strict code of conduct.

Beyond the fun, the effects and possibilities of artificial intelligence are potentially so powerful that it is appropriate to quickly mark out its uses and put them under the control of institutions that are guarantors of the public good.

The ideal is individuals and companies responsible and accountable for the applications that are made of artificial intelligence, as they are, in principle, in health or the environment.
