Music Lab: 14 online applications to understand music

Ideal for any beginner music class

The Chrome Music Lab offers 14 online apps for playing with music, explaining music, making music. All instruments play online, and teachers can introduce children to different musical concepts, get them to compose music and share it.

  1. Shared Piano - Enjoy a synthesizer together from a computer keyboard. The instructions are simple, the settings just as much and recording is possible and shareable.

  2. The Song Maker - Program a score of two instruments (melody and rhythm) and sing over it. The settings are a bit more technical and introduce music notation notions (scale choice, cutting... staff).

  3. Rhytme - Rhythm - Features a gallery of characters playing three percussion instruments. The 12 beat staff is programmed in different combinations.

  4. Spectrogram - View all the frequencies of different instruments and their harmonics, including one's own voice, live.

  5. Sound Waves - Visualize sound waves in two ways and better understand the concept of frequency.

  6. Arpeggios - Show all the combinations of arpeggios and introduce the concept. But if you don't know what an arpeggio is, you'll need someone to explain it to you.

  7. Kandinsky - Named after the artist Wassily Kandinsky for whom painting is comparable to playing music. Draw a line or several, they will be transformed into sounds of longer or shorter duration and frequency, depending on where you draw. Fun.

  8. Voice Spinner - Record a 5 second sequence of your voice, looped and then listen to it at different speeds, right side up or upside down. Curious.

  9. Harmonics  - A base note and the next 5 harmonics, one octave each time. Simple.

  10. Piano Mechanics - Piano Roll - Musical scores by Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Satie... cut out as if on a player piano roll. Interesting illustration of musical writing. Impressive.

  11. Oscillators - Experiment with different wave shapes: square, sawtooth, triangular, sine. Move your mouse up or down to change the frequency.

  12. Strings - A string is plucked at different points and changes frequency depending on its length. The two lengths are complementary. Simple.

  13. Melody Maker - Place your notes on an 8 beat staff. Simple.

  14. Chords - Discover minor and major chords. If you don't know the difference or why, someone will have to explain it to you.
