Tens of thousands in this situation in France
The face of homelessness seems to be one associated with adults who have found themselves, voluntarily or otherwise, on the streets. Yet this incomplete portrait omits minors. According to UNICEF, 42,000 children are homeless in France alone. A telephone number exists in Paris to respond to rental emergencies. However, despite political promises, these numbers and shelters are overwhelmed.
So, as this Brut report shows, entire families are forced to wait in the January cold for organizations to help them find a place to spend each winter night, and to offer them meals. While some of these families are immigrants, others in regularized situations are still unable to pay the rents in the French capital. As a result, their children sometimes have to drop out of school, as high schools require a home address for enrolment. Demonstrations were even necessary before the town hall finally reserved a gymnasium to accommodate many of the people featured in this report.
