"Human beings are deeply relational" as Rubenstein, C.M. & Shaver asserted in a joint article; loneliness affects all strata of society and does not spare young people. It can exert a significant influence on individuals' academic success, both positively and negatively, as we read in the UDS online magazine Student Spaces:
"Loneliness even though it can be part of a rich life and allow contact with oneself and one's creativity, can become a source of significant suffering when it turns into chronic and unwanted isolation."
Thus, this article aims to explore the various effects of loneliness on academic success, focusing on its consequences, both beneficial and harmful, and proposing solutions to remedy them.
Loneliness as a factor influencing academic success
Loneliness is a complex phenomenon that can have a significant impact on various aspects of life, including an individual's academic success. As such, it can be a factor influencing the latter in a number of ways. Some studies have shown that students who spend more time alone may have more time to concentrate on their studies. This can be particularly beneficial for tasks requiring sustained attention, such as reading or writing essays.
It should also be noted that some people naturally prefer to spend time alone, and in this regard, Nguyen quoted in CTREQ (2019) states:
"solitude sought for pleasure and for its intrinsic values is corollary to better psychological health, especially for students who feel no particular sense of belonging to social groups."
That said, some students need others to get ahead, and loneliness is more likely to lead to failure - hence the positive and negative aspects of loneliness on academic success.
The positive aspects of solitude
Solitude can also have positive aspects. It can enable individuals to develop their independence and their ability to solve problems on their own. On this subject, HEYME states:
"among the benefits of solitude is letting go of the outside world to connect with one's desires, dreams, imagination and creativity."
What's more, it offers a space for personal reflection, which can encourage the latter as well as introspection. It's also worth noting that, on the one hand, some students prefer to work alone, which enables them to better assimilate information and deepen their knowledge. Solitude enables them to concentrate more on their studies and avoid distractions. As Heyme goes on to say: "Solitude also allows us to give way to emotions that we don't allow ourselves to express in public: sadness, anger, the blues...". To justify this, we can take the example of the solitary writer, the painter in his studio or the scientist in his laboratory, for whom solitude is the ideal moment to have flashes of genius. However, excessive solitude can also have negative consequences for academic success.
The negative aspects of solitude
Being alone makes us vulnerable to our inner critics; loneliness can generate feelings of isolation and emotional distress. Motivation can be affected, leading to a drop in productivity and academic results. In this regard, the magazine Psychologue en ligne states:
"being alone can offer a rich psychological experience, but too much isolation can have a negative impact on one's physical and mental health".
Moreover, lack of social interaction can limit opportunities for collaborative learning and mutual enrichment with peers. Chronic loneliness can lead to mental balance problems, such as depression and anxiety, which can impair academic performance. This is why Capcioppo quoted in the Order of Psychologists states:
"the absence of social connection triggers the same primary alarm bells as hunger, thirst and physical pain."
So what can be done about it?
Solutions to mitigate the negative effects of loneliness
To remedy the negative effects of loneliness on academic success, several solutions can be considered. Firstly, it's essential to raise awareness among students, teachers and parents of the importance of balancing loneliness and social interaction. It's important to recognize that some students need time alone to concentrate, but that excessive isolation can be detrimental.
Schools can set up social support programs for students, such as study groups or extracurricular activities (Holt-Lunstad and Smith, 2016). Students may also seek out opportunities to network and socialize, whether by joining clubs or participating in community events, which can be extracurricular activities that encourage interaction between students. These interactions help build friendships, share ideas and foster a collaborative learning environment.
In addition, educational institutions may have tutoring programs to help struggling students and offer them extra support. Advice and guidance from teachers is also invaluable for students going through periods of excessive loneliness. Finally, technological advances offer new possibilities for staying connected and engaged in academic social networks. Online platforms can be used for peer collaboration, sharing educational resources and participating in discussions.
In other words, it's important to remember that solitude can have a significant effect on academic success, with both positive and negative aspects. It is therefore important to find a balance between time spent alone and time spent in the company of others to optimize academic success. By implementing solutions to mitigate the negative effects of loneliness, individuals can improve their well-being and academic performance.
