Anomaly precursors

In time series, an anomaly announces itself one way or another

In addition to its origin, one of the most frequent parameters of a data collection is when the data was recorded; "December 6, 2023 at 16:26:33"; thus we accumulate data that can be represented in time.

When several sets of data linked to the same element are put together, patterns of behavior may emerge that would not otherwise appear. In the case of major anomalies, for example, data scientist Paul Boniol wondered whether there might be warning signs in time series data.

Whether in industrial or management applications, detecting anomalies before they turn into disasters is of considerable interest. And indeed, there are often precursory signs, "symptoms", small anomalies that end up resonating and multiplying in a cascade.

"The VALDA project-team has some fifteen members. They work on the fundamental aspects and systems of complex data management, particularly those produced by human activity."

Their work has led to applications and patents that make systems more reliable and enable corrective action to be taken in good time.
