While some Romantic writers drew their inspiration from the contemplation of nature, the muse seems to have lost all its value with the advent of artificial intelligence. Indeed, after education, it's now the turn of those involved in the art of music to experience the anguish of the possible replacement of human talent by an improved machine capable of composing music to order.
Whether it's artistic creation or the algorithmization of music, it seems that AI is the talk of the music industry. A song by Canadian artists Drake and The Weeknd, supposedly a collaboration, was generated by an AI and caused quite a stir. This situation brings to the fore the question of ethics in the use of AI. The European Union has begun to take regulatory measures, but this has not prevented a profound distortion of the art of music, given that already 60% of artists - according to Ditto, a UK-based music distributor - admit to having used AI to create music.
How can we explain the use of AI in this industry? What are the consequences for human talent? What safeguards is the music industry putting in place to limit the spread of AI-generated music?
Keeping up with the times, or the cult of convenience
There's no doubt that artificial intelligence has become an integral part of everyday life. If in the field of education it has helped to increase accessibility, among other things, it could be that AI will have virtually the same kind of effect in the music creation process.
For a human being, creating is a complex process that depends on his state of mind, his sensitivity and much more besides. It requires many sacrifices in terms of time, energy and financial costs. Using AI, on the other hand, spares him all these constraints. Jonathan Dauphinais, director and musical director, doesn't see things any differently, and says that using AI speeds up the work from a technical point of view. But does using this tool really promise a unique creation?
If it's more convenient to use AI to write texts or compose music, it's also important to point out that the degree of authenticity of this creation will diminish accordingly. After all, AI simply retrieves existing data from a database in order to respond to the user's request. In this respect, Jonathan Dauphinais acknowledges that, creatively speaking, AI is not yet capable of producing unique, original works of art, as is the case with humans. Although originality is relative, the artist still uses what exists to produce as does the AI; the difference is that humans will want to add their own, unlike machines that work mainly with rational data.
As we can see, the use of AI in the creative process is part of a desire on the part of certain players in the music industry to reduce work constraints, even if this comes at a cost: producing what has already been heard. Even so, this advance has implications for the future of talent in the music industry.
What happens to human talent in the age of AI?
If being a talented craftsman in the music industry is often the ingredient that counts for success, artificial intelligence is revolutionizing this established order. From now on, the most talented people are those who are able to formulate a query to the AI in the clearest possible way. Is this really talent? I dare not say.
However, if there's one thing I can say with a great deal of certainty, it's that the process of artistic creation is indeed being distorted, as the craftsman's know-how is being overshadowed by a machine that simply creates works using banks of works. This creates unfair competition within the music industry, which seems to be somewhat encouraged by certain players in the same industry, given that the Grammy Awards have announced that AI-generated tracks may be nominated under certain conditions. This surprising decision is a sure sign of the diminishing power of human talent in this sector of culture.
In this perspective, if AI-created songs flood the music space, to the detriment of those produced by humans, there's no need to draw you a picture! The artisans of this industry might no longer be able to make a living from their art, given that AI is capable of reproducing a sound or vocal timbre without the author's authorization. Such authorization would entail costs for the author wishing to assert his or her rights.
As you can see, human talent is under threat from the domination of AI. Be that as it may, this tool should be seen as a support for creation, not as a substitute for it. A crisis is looming. So, what safeguards are players in the music industry taking to limit the damage caused by AI?
Safeguards: a way out of the crisis...
Since AI influences the music industry's entire production chain, from writing to consumption, players in this sector need to take precautions. That's why more and more streaming platforms are working to protect copyright by removing AI-generated tracks.
As far as creation is concerned, perhaps ethics courses should be included in fine arts institutes, so that learners are equipped with good morals, a work ethic, to which they must adhere throughout the music creation process.
