Is Parcoursup fair?

Inria's Fairplay researchers explore this topic using innovative analysis techniques

"From an IT point of view, assigning 950,000 young people a place from a choice of 24,000 training courses is still a fairly straightforward process. But guaranteeing equal opportunities is another matter altogether!"
Simon Mauras - Researcher with the Fairplay joint project team
No matter how the criteria are weighted, you have to be able to justify the result and ensure that the rules are known. For example, if the priority of a student's choices is a more important criterion than their academic results, they need to know this.

The problem is to translate fairness into an algorithm, to find a mathematical translation that can be integrated into an algorithm, and to be able to validate its ethical properties. We can also add the issue of confidentiality and its limits. Even if I don't know a person's name, I can recognize them in a crowd by a certain number of their physical characteristics or habits.

"Confidentiality of private data, another challenge for researchers, is also based on groups and comparisons. Let's imagine an AI tool that uses aggregated data from anonymized groups: we compare the data of a complete group with that of the same private group of one of its members. The notion of 'differential confidentiality' postulates that if the statistic changes significantly, we can deduce that the algorithm 'knows' too much about the discarded person."

In the case of Parcoursup, these questions of fairness arise for international students, on whom there is much less data to draw on. Other issues, such as the allocation of boarding school places or waiting times for special cases, also require better answers.

The Fairplay group is also developing solutions to help universities and schools, which are sovereign in their choices, to assess a posteriori whether they have selected the right applications. Beyond Parcoursup, the ethical AI promoted by Fairplay can benefit society as a whole, and examples are presented...
