List of sites that teach sign language

These sites are clearly among the most comprehensive on the free web:

 

  • AQEPA - A collection of resources for people with hearing problems, including courses.

  • Sign Language Basics - Featuring the Voltaire Project. 10000 signs, 200 phrasings. Introductory course.

  • LSF Dictionary. 2,900 signs listed, accessible by written words arranged alphabetically. The signs are illustrated in videos.
     
  • Elix - The living dictionary in sign language.
    Type in a word and you'll get its written definition and a video illustrating the concept in sign language. You can even suggest signs. Co-financed by the European Union. 

  • Deaf Language Lexicon - Swiss Federation of the Deaf - Comprehensive dictionary with the particularity of being trilingual: French sign language (LSF), German sign language (DSGS) and Italian sign language (LIS). One can also find a meaning from a hand sign
     
  • Fondation des sourds du Québec.  A handy video dictionary, but also a free online course to learn LSQ
     
  • LSFB - Dictionary of Belgian Sign Language, Also includes a grammar.
     
  • LSQ App - An iOS app to learn Quebec sign language. Free
     
  • Multidico includes translations of phrases in addition to alphabetically ordered words. So you can learn to sign phrases like "I'm mad as hell," "drive slowly" or "please." The expressions are not very numerous but they are already a real progress compared to simple dictionaries which list isolated words. In addition, the signs are also described in writing, which is very practical when one starts learning sign language or has a specific need.
     
  • PiSourd - 2917 sign videos accompanying as many concepts, including nearly 2000 in the dictionary. Initiative of the French-speaking Switzerland.
     
  • Sematos - A handy dictionary by topic and index.
     
  • Spread the sign - Lexicon of different sign languages around the world.23 languages: all European languages and also Russian and Japanese.  Administered by the European Sign Language Center.
     
  • Wikisign - User-powered sign language dictionary. Wikisigns includes just under 500 signs at the moment, but has some interesting features: mnemonic tips for remembering a sign, signing with a baby, comparing different ways of signing... A list of dictionaries is also provided.
     
  • School terminologies.
    The French and Math/Sign Language Lexicon Repertoire will quickly become indispensable to teachers and parents who are required to accompany deaf youth in their school learning. The terms of grammar and text explanation for French, arithmetic, algebra and geometry for math, are translated into French sign language, each sign being illustrated in video and accompanied by a small drawing showing the position and movement of the hands (see illustration). This site was created by the Institut des Jeunes Sourds de Bourg-La-Reine, near Paris.
