The Good, The Bad and The Accountant: a game about corruption in politics

Can you juggle ethics and pressure to bend the rules?

Serious games designed by teams of journalists are good at transcribing real-life situations from reports, field analysis or simply data. J++, a group of information workers based in Stockholm and Porto, specializes in data. Based on their work, they have developed a serious game that puts the player at the heart of modern municipal politics. The aim is to tackle the delicate issue of corruption.

The difficult balancing act

In this newsgame, the player takes on the role of an administrative chief of staff. Her task is to help the mayor of an unspecified city make decisions. It's an arduous task, since you have to juggle finances and the town's various personalities. Entrepreneurs and friends of the mayoress will often present the player with dilemmas.

Should you make a decision that will displease the industrialists and risk being fired? Should you favor them, risking political gain if you find out?

Not to mention the legal risks of conflicts of interest, which can pay off but end in jail. Risk gauges rise with each decision, increasing the possibility of an endgame. The aim is to survive the political world from 1993 to 2013. A difficult mission to accomplish.

Situations drawn from reality

It has to be said that failure is almost inevitable, even when acting as ethically as possible. The game, based on Swedish, Dutch, Quebecois and German experiences, aims to demonstrate how municipal corruption is not simply a matter of one individual acting badly.

In short, a very interesting - and cynical - experiment to try out as a citizen or student of political science, to provoke reactions and discussion.
