Education lessons for refugees in Ethiopia

Refugees are not apart, their integration is part of the reality of the whole country.

"For a refugee learner, education can restore a sense of belonging. It's the key to a better future. For an educational planner or manager, it means taking into account the learning needs and fundamental rights of all learners, including refugees."

If we start doing joint activities, I think the tradition, the culture will change. I think [joint planning] is really crucial.

The report "Crisis-sensitive educational planning for refugees and host communities: lessons from Ethiopia; case study" presents the main lessons learned from the Ethiopian experience of integrating refugees into education.

Considering the reality that displacement is most often prolonged and indefinite in time, a longer-term commitment is needed to cope, which obviously includes education.

Whereas previously in Ethiopia, the management of refugee education constituted a separate system, now regional agents are increasingly taking charge of refugee education, thanks to various projects and the initiatives of local partners. There has been a change in the way refugee issues are managed.

"The integration of refugees into the Ethiopian education system is set to continue. Ethiopia's next education sector plan, which runs until 2025,takes refugees into account for the first time: this represents a crucial new step that includes them, right from the start, in the planning cycle."

Which is rather good news, and something that most countries should learn from when it comes to welcoming and integrating refugees.
