Reading a comic book aloud to toddlers - A rewarding activity for all

Awakening and stimulation

Like blank pages, humans arrive in the world. Fortunately, in order to understand it, while very small, they can count on the family, their first living space. There they will learn to speak, read, write ... the process of socialization is long, the methods diverge from one place to another, ranging from simple contact with the family, the initiation of board games, reading books or better, comic books.

In this process, the toddler is totally dependent on his surroundings. We can familiarize him with his environment through the reading of comics. What better way to do this than with the voice? How often should the voice be adjusted? So many questions arise.

However, since communication is about meeting others, it's best to be audible! So, reading comics aloud allows you to get a message across to the little ones, but which one? The content of this message does nothing more than guarantee their cognitive development. This implies that this practice would have benefits on the social evolution of the young child. So what are these benefits?

Stimulating a taste for reading

While reading is a medicine with multiple virtues as Guinaelle Kengne has recognized, loving to read is not, however, a given. It is the result of a long term work that implies an initiation from a young age. Starting very early is important, because the discovery of the book, of a new activity, of a fictional universe that is a perfect harmony between text and images, at a regular frequency so that it becomes a ritual, will be able to avoid the very little one to perceive reading as a chore, something restrictive.

To do this, his parents have a task to accomplish, as the toddler does not know how to read, so they must use strategies so that the future reader becomes familiar with the book while having fun. It is therefore important to dramatize the readings in order to make them captivating and to show the toddler that this activity is fun and exciting.

The dramatization of the comic book storyline then relies on voice work, gestures, intonation according to the situations, the look, which are all techniques that make the communication lively, make the very little one love the story and by the same token, arouse in him, once he is older, the culture of books. This is all the more true since a reader who is passionate about comics could have no trouble discovering other types of books. It is understandable that reading aloud contains certain properties that guarantee the cultivation of reading in toddlers. However, this reality is not the only benefit that can be attributed to reading comics aloud.Let's note that this activity participates just as much in the awakening of the child's senses.

Awakening the senses

When we perform a reading, all of our senses are awakened: sight, hearing and even smell. In this sensory-filled adventure, the parent in communion with the child explores the book using their senses. Indeed, the sight intervenes at the time of the contact with the text, the illustrations, the forms, the colors, the animals, the characters... The parent's role here is to engage the toddler by pointing to these entities to spark their interest.

Also, hearing is solicited when in a loud voice, the parent-guide observes a variation in intonation as the story is read. He or she can read in a low voice or a high voice. In addition to that, the comics can contain melodies, sounds... And finally, as far as the sense of smell is concerned, at each passage from one page to another, the parent makes his little one discover the smell of paper, glue and ink. These different discoveries and sensations for the toddler, make comics an object of curiosity that he or she takes pleasure in handling.

The solicitation of his senses allow the child to develop, integrate the fictional universe and especially, learn to master his environment. All the senses are challenged when we are in contact with a comic book. Awakening one's senses through the story is a primary stage of one's evolution, but stimulating one's imagination constitutes an even higher level.

Stimulating the imagination

While natural resources are strategic elements that must ensure a good rank of a country on the international scene, creativity is not a data to be neglected as it is known that "knowledge, culture, experience, imagination are becoming strategic resources."

Therefore, it is agreed that it is good practice to stimulate the imagination of the very young. Indeed, in contact with a fantastic world containing characters with extraordinary powers, the young reader invests an imagination that opens the door to an interface linking the fictional world created by the author of the comic book to the one of his own, the first influencing the second. The stimulation of the young reader's imagination thus has as its portal, contact with a comic book that constitutes the starting point for the creation of another fictional universe that is specific to the child.

Practically speaking, the acquisition of this skill depends heavily on the parent's ability to dramatize the comic book story, thanks to his or her skills as a speaker and even as a director. If the dramatization is successful, the stimulation of the imagination guarantees creativity in the child; he/she becomes more apt to solve the puzzles that are proposed to him/her. Thus, in the classroom, he gains a head start over his peers who have little or no familiarity with comics.

It is conceivable that stimulating the imagination of the very young relies heavily on the abilities of the guide (the parent) to bring to life the story he or she shares with the young reader. To do this, the parent must do some preliminary work that will consist of, first of all, loving to read in order to transmit their passion more easily, secondly, to take ownership of the story, to remain authentic and natural, and finally to mark the pauses by respecting the punctuations.
