Deciding to live simply
A simpler life in art and everyday life
In a world of superlatives and "always more", some people try to go against the tide. How about a simpler life? What if we stopped burdening ourselves with both the material and the spiritual? While this may seem easier said than done, some people are finding the courage to take the plunge. This ARTE report looks at 5 artists for whom simplicity has become the driving force in their lives.
It can start with action. For example, a Japanese visual artist now based in Halle, Germany, has decided to express himself solely through line. Straight, black, thin; he doesn't seek to place it systematically in a search for meaning or to affix philosophical titles to it. A couple of jazz musicians have moved from highly orchestral pieces to minimalist tracks to focus more attention on the lyrics. At the same time, they also adopted a simplistic approach to life, greatly reducing their consumption of everything.
One artist, for his part, moved out of the noise of the city and into a remote rural setting among flocks of sheep, in order to live more simply and more in communion with his environment. A painter, on the other hand, lives her entire life in a small, converted fire engine, where she lives as a nomad to the rhythm of the days and nights. Perhaps being an artist makes this kind of simplicity easier. Nonetheless, this portrait might inspire some to rethink their priorities and get rid of the superfluous.
"This research work opens up a space of intersection between an associative activity of training migrants, their encounter with employers and the academic view of these facts. The product of this intersection is analyzed in such a way as to document the gap between recruiter expectations and candidate responses in a field little explored until now: that of a world of solidarity."
Incorporating movement can be beneficial to learning. Dance, in particular, is an excellent way to get students moving while encouraging them to develop their creativity. Dance teachers have even created tools to introduce the art of physical expression in a fun way. The results have been a success.
The quest for a better school life is more and more emphasized in society to such an extent that many people feel deeply torn between the desire and the need to fill the gaps they feel. This translates into a constant desire to improve the school experience because even today this common place of learning does not fully constitute for all of us a joyful time of life when it could and should be.
History has left anecdotes and artifacts that have become symbols for different nations. But as time goes by, their interpretation can change. What's more, while we place a great deal of emphasis on national history, there is little for local history, which is often intertwined with it. What if we were to draw inspiration from the experience of Marseilles schoolchildren who have given life and meaning to the unsuspected historical symbols of their neighborhood?
