"There's an AI for that"(1) lists almost 17,000 artificial intelligence (AI) services. Generative AIs and algorithms are developed for use, and the more they are used, the more is invested in them. But when it comes to users and investment, not all AI is created equal.
Some start out with billions in investment, while others integrate with platforms that already have millions of users. Those who start out without either are not on the same playing field, and their models will eventually be bought or integrated by companies who see the value, or disappear. This is the case for 97% of them. So we took a look at the most popular from an independent service (SimilarWeb (2)).
We were surprised by the ranking of some of them. There are parallel worlds whose existence we suspected via social networks, but underestimated. Others, which we thought were very much in the commercial realm, are in fact very much in use, whether for automation, detection, identification, prediction or decision-making.
A.I. integrated into systems such as those from Google (Gemini), Meta (llama), Apple, IBM, SalesForce and other services are not considered, since we are unable to estimate their use. However, there's no doubt about their importance. We could probably get a good approximation from their electricity consumption, already calculated at over 1% of global consumption and set to increase fivefold over the next few years, even with the expected optimizations.
Those who believe that young people should not be exposed to AI technologies or applications are deluding themselves. Young people don't ask for permission to use them, either in or out of school (3). The only intelligent approach is to learn how to use them properly and, obviously, we're all going to learn it together.
