The benefits of pets

The bond between humans and their four-legged companions

When man began to tame animals, it was a major step forward. Not only did some of us gain access to meaty foods without having to hunt, but we were also able to enjoy the benefits of companions in our daily lives. Today, we are more aware than ever of the strong bond between pets and humans. At UQAM, since 2022, the Department of Psychology has been offering a course addressing this very important question of the relationship between the two.

Students can learn about and, for the most part, witness the benefits of the presence of a dog, cat, horse or rabbit. Reactions are physiologically immediate, while studies over the past 20 years have shown that interaction with a canine, for example, significantly lowers blood pressure. According to numerous studies, the lack of contact with other human beings is just as negative as smoking or obesity.

The presence of an animal, especially a dog, greatly increases contact with others. An English researcher tested this using a dog trained not to approach humans "when working". Yet she had three times more interaction with others than when she made the same journey alone. In fact, it was strangers who were most inclined to introduce themselves in the animal's presence.

The COVID pandemic forced everyone to stand back for a while, in order to slow down the contagion. During this period, studies have shown that people with pets have a greater sense of well-being. Hence the growing interest in zootherapy, service animals and other initiatives that add animals to everyday life.
