Is reading being lost? That's the discussion France Inter held on the "Quart d'heure de lecture" day, when all French people were invited to read for at least fifteen minutes during the day. Because although studies are contradictory, in general, France, like most countries, is seeing a drop in the number of readers. Not dramatically, but the lure of screens is still very strong.
Nevertheless, we mustn't rest on our laurels. In fact, it's a reminder of the importance of inculcating reading from the earliest age in thatched cottages. Adults need to allow themselves to immerse themselves in the physical object of a book just as much as children do. It's not guaranteed to turn children into great readers later on, but it will at least create a different bond with books. Reading aloud as a family is a good way of creating unique moments.
What's more, many children have the impression that authors are all inaccessible dead people. It's therefore important for authors to be invited into schools to talk with pupils, for example, about a book they've written. This makes for a very rich exchange of views, and takes the dust off the writer's role with young people.
