An activity that's good for the head and the heart
Very few people will say they never listen to music. It's a popular, powerful and unifying art form. According to musician, music education and choral singing teacher and ensemble director Emmanuel Boulanger, the practice is a search for something even stronger. In his speech at TEDxPoitiers, he explains that singing or playing an instrument helps to create social bonds and find comfort, whatever the moment in life.
As he sees it, anyone can engage in these activities. Knowing how to speak means knowing how to sing, you just need to know your voice and learn to master the art. So he organizes musical weekends where regulars and neophytes sing and even record what they produce.
The same goes for instruments, which require more practice but can be learned by all. He sets up orchestras where beginners play just a few notes on an instrument, and as they progress, they increase the score to be performed. It's a positive and motivating approach, as most of them want to reach the level of their colleague who plays the whole melody.
How do you talk to children about genetics and heredity? A British museum has come up with the method: design a game in which you create a line of adorable creatures with precise objectives. The game is fun, colorful and easy to learn. Even adults will succumb to the charms of the bugs and their large families.
The Englishes MOOC course was developed by an artist and is designed for anyone interested in the (English) language. It explores the history of English, its pronunciation, and its relationship to the art world.
