France prepares for the use of AI in national defense
In July 2024, the French government appointed Bertrand Rondepierre, formerly with Google, as Director of the Ministerial Agency for Artificial Intelligence in Defense (AMIAD). The idea is for France to be at the forefront of AI use in defense around the world. Because, as Mr. Rondepierre points out in his interview, the danger is that we will fall behind other nations, such as China and others.
Indeed, most companies are looking into the use of algorithms to protect their territory. We already know that a good proportion of future conflicts will take place on computer systems, and that AIs can help detect possible flaws or attempted attacks.
The expression "fog of war" illustrates the danger of being left without information in a context where you have to defend yourself. Intelligence is therefore becoming essential and, as we now know, AIs are experts in the art of rapidly analyzing astronomical quantities of data.
