We only have one chance to make a first impression. Of course, we have to go beyond that, but it's still the first mark on others. Teachers are no exception to this rule on the first day of school. As the year progresses, they'll still be able to win over the hearts and minds of every student. Nevertheless, they'll have a head start on their new class if they prepare well for the first day.
This Moroccan teacher decided to create a YouTube presentation to give advice to his French-speaking colleagues. In his view, the first day should be used to provide a foretaste of what awaits them for the rest of the year. That means making sure his classroom is inviting. It could feature work by former students to give an idea of what has been done in class, or a slide show with soft music to welcome learners. In fact, it's important for everyone to receive a slightly personal welcome to show interest.
The first day is a way of getting a feel for what's to come over the course of the year, as well as creating motivation and commitment. This can be with ice-breaker activities between students or discussions on upcoming topics that will be covered during the school year. Using interactive activities already will even send an interesting message to the youngsters in the classroom. And it all has to fit in with the teacher's personality. Moving away from oneself will quickly be unmasked by the learners, who will then develop more distrust than trust.

The Internet is a constant source of distraction. Social networks and exponentially multiplying content can quickly draw people away from their personal or professional activities. So some people turn everything off for a while, just to recharge their batteries and reactivate the engine of creativity. But disconnecting from the Internet has major emotional and social consequences.

The beauty of knowledge and science is its evolution. Does this show up in teaching materials? Not always, unfortunately. The obsolescence of textbooks is leading some to call for an end to their use. Others are proposing that we take what is accurate from them and find other ways of sharing current knowledge.
