Parenthood, a source of happiness?

Does raising children make you happy?

Happy parents behind a crawling toddler

We're in a special time, because today, technically, we're not as obliged to have children in our lives. It's not as if there's a shortage of human beings. Yet some people say that parenthood is a source of happiness. But is it really? This ARTE program takes a look at the issue, and adds a lot of nuance.

We often realize that the happiest parents are those who are more flexible, who accept a certain sacrifice of their desires and, above all, to be imperfect people. Because parenthood is a lifelong contract, the outcome of which will only truly be known at the end of life.

It may seem taboo, but research has shown that 10% of parents have regrets and would not have chosen this path had they known. Nevertheless, for many, it gives meaning to their lives, bringing a touch of the unexpected and unsuspected sources of happiness and affection.

No study really shows that adults with children are happier than those without. However, this choice can be one of the greatest sources of meaning and joy for those prepared not to be fooled by the diktats of others.
