Our certainties tested by time

Change and adapt without losing your goals

Yesterday's truths can become uncertain overnight, as other ideas and tools allow us to observe reality from a different angle. Eras come and go, and new ideas emerge; old ones may no longer meet concerns, hence the need to adapt. But should we accept everything in the name of adaptation?

Traces of the past

Whatever the intellectual comfort we've settled into, unexpected changes can happen. Flexibility isn't always the order of the day, as some powers are highly dependent on an idea, a concept or a trend that, unfortunately for them, doesn't stand the test of time.

Many claim to be traditionalists or purists. They do so on the basis of a trend in a specific context. However, remaining stuck in the past is also a refusal to integrate into the perspective of changing mentalities. Philosopher Simone Manon teaches us about the reality of time in these terms:

"time, whose nature for us is an enigma, is in itself neither an ally nor an enemy. It is the fabric of our existence insofar as the fundamental way of being of what exists is to project ourselves onto what is not yet by remembering what was."

As we grow up, our convictions are likely to change depending on the situation. It's easy to identify the erosive effect of waves on beach stones. As the water ricochets off them, it leaves imprints; the same is true of human beings. When rediscovered, the experiences of the past often overturn our certainties.

In agriculture, for example, certainties linked to the sowing season have been overturned by climate change. In Cameroon, despite the forecasts made by ONACC (the National Observatory on Climate Change), it is increasingly difficult to rely on them. While there was a time when we had more certainty about the date of the first rains that would be favorable to farming, it is becoming counterproductive for a farmer to remain within a logic based on data that has become uncertain.

Education put to the test

When it comes to education, parents and educators need to be aware of future changes and possible adaptations, given age, convictions and generational differences. Flexibility requires anticipation, as the warning signs of change become apparent.

In a world in the throes of a digital revolution, educational approaches are being rethought, and not taking into account the upheavals brought about by artificial intelligence because we are still rooted in a classic transmission model is not conducive to efficient learning adapted to the situation.

Societal change, social mobilization

Having understood this contextual need for a change of approach, the DRANE-Guadeloupe seminar organized in 2025 addressed the issue of AI in schools. The particularity of this meeting was precisely the mobilization of all the players primarily concerned: primary and secondary school pupils, teachers, parents and other educational stakeholders. On the menu were workshops and conferences with debates and different points of view, especially between learners and teachers.

One of the lessons learned from the seminar was the need to redefine what is expected of students. With this in mind, Erwan Peitel, Inspector General in France, who was visiting Guadeloupe, posed a fundamental question: "Is it still relevant to assess homework in the age of AI?" He suggests "using these moments to consolidate learning, review notions or adopt a flipped classroom approach."

In reality, children's relationship to learning has completely changed, as they now have access to a plethora of resources, and Artificial Intelligence is one of the most disruptive. Educational approaches are bound to change.

In this vein, certain technological tools that were once inaccessible to many are now within everyone's reach. It's precisely this change that is creating considerable uncertainty and apprehension. As Stephan Gaspirini puts it: "Uncertainty is not an exception in our lives: it has become the rule.

Adaptability is not acceptance of everything

Given the omnipresence of information, with data differing from one study to another, sorting is just as important. Just because propaganda is made about a particular approach doesn't mean we should adopt it without understanding what's at stake. The implications are very often beyond our perception, which is why we need to take a step back.

Adapting to certain contexts means putting up safeguards against realities that are more or less subtly imposed on us. Just because platforms offer the latest accessories doesn't mean we should simply embrace this dynamic. In view of the ecological stakes, resisting consumerist propaganda is not a refusal to adapt but an eco-responsible practice in a society mired in hyper-consumption and blind to environmental degradation.

In a world promoting the extrovert ideal, to use Susan Cain's phrase, where the emphasis is on appearances, on the need to shine and to be dominant, not subscribing to it is not synonymous with inferiority or a fault, but rather a necessary resistance to a certain equilibrium.
