Rediscovering the joy of writing in a machine age

Creating the desire to write without and even with AI

Artificial intelligence is daunting in its capabilities. In just a few minutes, it can create text, images and even videos that would normally take a human hours to produce. As a result, schools are wondering what their place is in a world where a machine can do anything. Does learning to write make sense in such a context?

The question is being asked, and it's becoming more important than ever for teachers to take up this issue in order to give an accurate picture of the art of writing. Because students, right from the ChatGPT madness of 2023, saw that while the tools were capable of providing solid arguments, they were less strong on creating works that aroused emotion. Some were even shocked by the tool's inability to create, for example, heartfelt, original song lyrics like those of their favorite artists.

To avoid this formatting of thought by artificial intelligence, teachers can then show how famous authors had to produce drafts before arriving at their books, and ask young people to take part in this type of exercise.

Artificial intelligence can also be used to teach writing skills, as composing a long (prompt) query requires a good use of syntax so that the algorithm really responds to the needs; a skill that will be useful in the future.

Some are even developing conversational robots capable of supporting students in their mastery of writing by pointing out areas for improvement.

The strategy would therefore be to combine experiences with AI and writing experiences without it, so that they can understand the differences, the uses and the importance of uniqueness in the way they write, which won't really be possible with a machine.

Restoring the joy of creation without demonizing the tools seems to be the plan for getting kids excited about writing in the first place.
