Extracurricular activities can make a positive contribution to young people's development. Whether sporting, cultural or community-based, they can stimulate young people's personal development and foster their commitment to school and society at large.
However, for these benefits to materialize, research shows that certain conditions must be met, and this concerns both the activities themselves and the schools that offer them. This guide summarizes the recommendations of research in this field via two main theories - positive development theory and self-determination theory - and concrete initiatives.
The necessary conditions in schools are also presented in a short 8-page dcument, including references.
