Ludopedagogy, or teaching through play, has developed considerably in recent years, drawing inspiration from the ludification processes used in the corporate world, and in marketing in particular. Lego® bricks have been given a second life through their use - in a roundabout way - in workshops and seminars, and the implementation of a scientifically validated method, Lego serious play®, which is described here.
A symbol of the link between business and university research, the method is the result of collaboration between the LEGO Group, MIT and the psychology laboratory at the University of Lausanne. The general principle is to let your hands do the talking to translate an embedded idea.
Multiple uses
In this way, the bricks have enabled teachers at the University of Leuven to develop their practices in an innovative and creative workshop.
Other educators were quick to see the value of the method for their own course content; for example, the use of Lego bricks in mathematics at school enables pupils to understand "concretely, to visualize mathematical abstraction", thus facilitating learning.
The bricks can also be used for other educational content, such as university methodology and, more specifically, reading. How can we motivate students to read, while at the same time discussing with them the effectiveness of reading adapted to different objectives (skimming, in-depth reading, etc.)? Reading is widely practiced at university, and is essential for success. However, many teachers are confronted with the unfortunate experience of students' low level of practice.
Application
I coach students in university methodology. The first difficulty I encountered was one of finance, since training in this method and the bricks for groups of 25 people required a considerable investment that was hard to afford.
After reading up on the subject, finding the means to take part in sessions and exchanging ideas with facilitators, I came up with my own set of essential principles.
- In terms of equipment, regular visits to second-hand stores, flea markets and garage sales enabled me to equip myself sufficiently.
- You don't have to stick to briquettes. For the record, I finally opted for wooden blocks, whose simplified shapes and colors are reminiscent of the famous bricks.
- The post-construction debriefing allows them to clarify various important aspects to be taken into account: thesis defended, researcher's point of view, status of the document, etc.)
In the end, edutainment is a very broad principle that consists of an infinite number of detour...
