Explaining explicit teaching

How to use this teaching approach

A teacher in a class where students raise their hands

The school teaches simple concepts to give students a foundation. However, more complex concepts and approaches soon require more work on the part of learners, who have to reuse the basics and introduce new knowledge. In this context, teachers need to find out how their class can meet the pedagogical objectives of the term, semester and school year. Explicit teaching can be a good way of doing this, as this capsule from the Conseil Scientifique de l'Education Nationale (CSEN) explains.

The principle of this pedagogy is to break down an abstract objective into different sub-themes of knowledge to be acquired in order to succeed. The capsule gives the example of reading comprehension, where concepts such as identifying key words, interrogative terms, etc. are divided up.

In each lesson, the teacher begins by presenting the day's objective. Next, he or she checks with the students what prior knowledge they have on the subject. The teacher then responds to a problem, clearly explaining the reasoning process used to arrive at the answer.

He can then carry out a large-group exercise in which everyone can participate and practice the concepts learned earlier. In the penultimate stage, learners will be asked to answer individual questions, some of which will be corrected in class. The course ends with a concluding session that summarizes what has been learned, announces the next lesson and specifies the work to be done at home to consolidate what has been learned.
