Deliberate practice in music learning

Intelligent instrument practice

A musician playing guitar outside on a brick wall

Learning to play a musical instrument is good training for the brain. It has to practice motor skills while working on the ear, melodies and so on. As a result, it can be a great exercise... or a very painful experience.

Many beginning musicians find themselves in the situation where they're stuck learning a piece of music, and it just won't work. No matter how much they practice, they keep making the same mistakes. This is discouraging for a brain that needs a certain amount of pleasure to stay motivated.

That's why deliberate practice is a better approach, according to this short podcast. Rather than repeating a tune without getting it right, we recommend deconstructing the difficult moments. The musician is then invited to take these bits of score and redo them very slowly, with the aim of becoming more aware of mistakes and finding strategies to prevent them recurring. With sessions like this, the brain is less likely to feel frustrated, and learns better how to master these moments.
