The COVID era has seen the expansion of a new work modality: telecommuting. In addition to reducing business costs, telecommuting enables workers to be more autonomous. On top of this, it can facilitate greater creativity and efficiency for workers in polychronic situations.
Telecommuting: a healthy revolution?
Ever since the practice of telecommuting began to gain ground, there have been conflicting views on this form of work. Indeed, some argue that it is no longer possible to control the employee's activities. In the same vein, the teleworker loses assiduity and finds it difficult to maintain the discipline required for the job. On a physical level, the problem of sedentariness is also increased.
Conversely, others see telecommuting as beneficial not only for employees, but also for employers. In fact, it considerably reduces daily expenses and burdens. Some companies have even gone completely telecommuting. One example is Penny, a financial management platform in France. It also seems that productivity is on the rise for people who work remotely.
Polychrony: creativity and efficiency
In the workplace, people are more focused on the tasks at hand, their thoughts are solely on the objectives, and the stress generated by the desire to be efficient in the face of more or less regular injunctions from the employer doesn't necessarily give free rein to the imagination. On the other hand, the telecommuting environment is conducive to a certain lull and calm in the relationship with work. Under these conditions, autonomy and freedom in the personal organization of work are the order of the day.
In fact, navigating between professional tasks and one's personal environment can help to find a solution or an idea to unblock a situation. Observing nature, watching a video while at work, smiling at a loved one as they pass by can all help to find a link and a way out of a work-related task.
For example, writing-related professions such as web copywriting for a platform are considered remote work. Very often, ideas emerge while we're focused on another task, so sharp ideas are often the result of a polychronic situation.
At some point, we might ask ourselves whether efficiency is always linked to the number of hours spent working face-to-face. In reality, it's because we innovate every time that we can really enable a company to take off. With this in mind, my telecommuting experience at Muna Kalati enabled me to generate several ideas over time that were implemented by management. The most important thing in this work organization was to complete my weekly tasks, which could be done before the end of the week.
Are we all moving towards telecommuting?
If it's true that telecommuting makes you more creative, should all workers be converted to this way of working? First of all, it's important to recognize that not everyone can telecommute. For one thing, it depends on the sector. The plumbing trade, for example, is almost unthinkable from a distance. On the other hand, we wouldn't want to suggest that you can't be creative in the workplace. Rather, considering a hybrid work organization that combines telecommuting and office work could facilitate family and professional balance.
To illustrate, the Kabod Group in Ghana has opted for this orientation, which results in greater employee fulfillment and socio-professional balance.
At the end of the day, professional creativity finds fertile ground in multi-tasking telecommuting contexts, because people are freer, calmer and more receptive to inspiration as they move back and forth between various professional and family activities.
