Tesla was betting on electric, but a company was preparing a new petroleum-free fuel

A carbon-neutral fuel that would make electric vehicles obsolete

With climate change having a major impact on every corner of the globe, many people are looking to reduce emissions of the gases responsible. Knowing that a large proportion of these emissions come from transport, including cars, every effort is being made to design vehicles that are less polluting. Obviously, the first image is that of the electric car.

It consumes no petrol and therefore emits no carbon dioxide. Nevertheless, the process promoted by Tesla and all other carmakers with their electric models remains imperfect. The batteries required are polluting to manufacture, they are not always efficient on long journeys and, what's more, replacing the 1.5 billion gasoline-powered vehicles on the planet will take decades. What if the solution lay in a different approach?

Making gasoline out of air

A young New York company has demonstrated a revolutionary creation for 2025. On a rooftop in the American metropolis, a machine the size of a refrigerator takes ambient air and changes it into gasoline. That's right. What Aircela has developed is a device that captures carbon from the air to create a carbon-neutral liquid fuel that works in vehicles.

In a public demonstration, the entrepreneurs showed that the machine was capable of producing enough fuel in a relatively short time to fill a conventional gasoline bottle. Except that this fuel has the advantage of being free from the sulfur and ethanol contaminants that contribute to air pollution. What's more, no special engine is needed to power a vehicle. This would make it possible to considerably reduce harmful gases from cars, without forcing everyone to change. All the more interesting since, as we said, electric vehicles are still not very efficient over long distances.

The transport industry on the lookout

What's more, Aircela's solution doesn't require a huge system of pipelines and refineries, as is the case with ordinary gasoline production. Every home, business and institution could have its own gasoline-making machine. So it's hardly surprising that industries such as shipping giants and others are keen to invest in this solution, which could save them money in the medium term, as well as having a better ecological footprint.

The European aviation industry, among others, is also very interested in these clean synthetic fuels, which could improve the state of air pollution worldwide.

For the moment, the project remains at the size of a rooftop refrigerator. The next step will be to try it out in carbon-neutral companies able to run these units on renewable energy (which was the case for the demonstration). If this proves possible, a world would open up in terms of transportation, among other things.
