Disturbing A.I.

Artificial intelligence is having an undeniably disruptive effect on almost all areas of human activity. A.I.'s capacity to process vast quantities of data exceeds our own by several orders of magnitude. What are we going to do with it? What shouldn't we do with it? As with the use of the atom, the rational and ethical limits to be set are still no match for the promises of power that fuel human passions.

In education, its effect is comparable to the introduction of the calculator in mathematics or spreadsheets in accounting, but with 100 times more ramifications. Why bother with languages, equations or computer code? Knowing the principles and when to apply them will undoubtedly be the final approach favored by the majority of users. A.I. will be used for production, work and leisure.

In research, data processing techniques are becoming a basic skill for every researcher. Even in fields that were thought to be relatively untouched by this technology, such as dance or construction, A.I. offers possibilities that are only just beginning to be appreciated. A.I. + medicine, A.I. + arts, A.I. + robotics, A.I. + weapons, A.I. + agriculture, A.I. + DNA. A.I. + emotions... There's no field where intelligence doesn't apply, artificial or otherwise.

And since everything can be learned, we'll have to learn to use it in education too.

Note: No article in this issue has been written by an artificial intelligence, and while three or four articles throughout Thot Cursus have used A.I. in part in their writing, none has been entirely written by an A.I. Finally, the images illustrating our articles are better ranked by search engines if they are A.I.-generated than if they come from photo banks, because they are original and rarely copied. Some of our images are now A.I.-generated.
