Many people work conscientiously to teach and make education work. We like to celebrate those who succeed academically, but those who contribute to that success are also valued: teachers at the forefront, administrators, technicians and other supporters generally take pride in their students' success. Model teachers are sometimes recognized, but more rarely other professionals, from technicians to maintenance staff, without whom the school would not be as functional.
It's not just the people who make the difference, it's also the control they exert over their environment. Many activities can only function if the conditions are right, and the best way to recognize those who ensure that these conditions are maintained is to acknowledge their responsibility and let them take control. There are few achievements that didn't take a lot of hard work to achieve. Respect for responsibility is a powerful form of trust and recognition.
Could we go so far as to recognize the good work of a ministry or minister? I've never seen a teachers' union or association do it, but it's probably happened somewhere. In any case, deserved recognition is an incentive to continue along the recognized path.
A rewarding environment may be demanding, but it knows how to appreciate the efforts of each individual who has contributed to the success of the whole. It's one of the hallmarks of environments where teacher satisfaction is high, and contributes all the more to the success of their students.
Who have you recognized recently? It's a pleasure to do it sincerely. Who have you been recognized by in recent months? Recognition by the community is a reassuring and guiding form of social acceptance. What's more, it doesn't cost much: a little attention and a little time go a long way.
