"They don't try hard anymore." We often hear this line when talking about the latest generations. It has to be said that more than ever, technology has automated tedious tasks, and of course, they benefit from it. But does that mean they don't make an effort?
First of all, we need to be able to define effort. Some evaluate it in terms of the intensity of the work accomplished, others in terms of its duration, and still others in terms of results. However, the true meaning of effort is a set of factors that lead an individual to accomplish tasks that are as much physical as they are intellectual.
Among these, perseverance plays a key role. No one will work themselves to death if they don't have a strong intrinsic motivation. And that motivation has to come from something deep down, not just from maxims scattered here and there by those around you. Our world, where neo-liberal economics reigns, is fuelled by the idea of will power; wanting something passionately will lead to success. A meritocratic fable that collapses when confronted with social science analysis and reality.
We don't all start from the same starting line. Social, economic, psychological and motor factors can enhance or diminish an initiative's chances of success. Not all students come from the same background: some already have a head start in basic knowledge, while others have to learn everything in school.
To convince them to get down to work, carrots and sticks can do the trick. However, it is undoubtedly more effective to propose pedagogical frameworks that encourage students to go beyond their personal limits. An educational world that recognizes the effort put into an exercise as much as the final grade could prove far more motivating for all learners. Schoolwork in its various forms would then become more tangible.
As we embark on a new year, perhaps we can resolve to reward the various efforts made by both the gifted and those with difficulties, so that everyone can feed their intrinsic motivation.
Happy reading!
